The Qualitative Research Tool Masquerading as a Meeting Bot
Calling Speak AI an "AI meeting assistant" is technically accurate but functionally misleading. If you evaluate it against Otter, Fathom, or Fireflies as a passive bot to join your daily standups, you will find it overpriced and oddly shaped.
Speak AI is not built for routine calendar clutter. It is a qualitative research repository built around audio and video analysis. Founded in 2018 in Toronto, the platform treats recorded media as unstructured text datasets rather than disposable meeting summaries. It transcribes audio in over 100 languages, but its primary purpose is extracting entities, tracking sentiment trends, comparing keywords across entire project folders, and querying repositories using multiple language models.
The Credit Arithmetic You Need to Run First
Speak AI operates on a hybrid pricing structure that catches casual buyers off guard.
The pay-as-you-go tier charges $0 a month and runs on purchased credits (1 credit = $1 USD, minimum top-up of 10 credits). File uploads cost 2 credits per hour for standard languages and 3 credits for premium languages. Live meeting transcription, however, jumps to 4 credits per hour. Translation costs 12 credits per 100,000 characters, while AI chat runs roughly 0.08 credits per inquiry.
The self-serve paid tier, Pro, costs $25 per user each month, or $20 per user billed annually ($240 per year). On paper, it sounds reasonable. But Pro includes three hard boundaries:
- It is capped at a maximum of 5 seats. If you have 6 team members, you cannot simply pay for a sixth user; you are pushed into custom Enterprise discussions.
- Storage is restricted to 10 GB per user.
- Each seat receives 25 credits per month.
That credit ceiling is the real friction point. If you use Speak AI purely for pre-recorded file uploads, 25 credits buys 12.5 hours of audio transcription. But if you connect the meeting assistant to live Zoom or Google Meet calls at 4 credits an hour, your entire monthly quota vanishes in just 6 hours and 15 minutes. For anyone with a typical tech calendar, you will burn through your included allowance within two weeks and pay $4 per hour out of pocket on top of your subscription.
Where It Justifies the Math
If your workload involves UX research, academic interviews, or clinical studies, Speak AI earns its keep in areas standard notetakers ignore.
First, its AI Chat is multi-model. Instead of locking you into a proprietary summarizer, Speak AI lets you toggle between Claude, GPT, and Gemini to interrogate individual recordings or search across entire media libraries. You can ask Claude to synthesize recurring customer objections across twenty client interviews, or use GPT to extract structured tables of pain points.
Second, the platform opens its data to developers and automated workflows. Alongside webhooks, Zapier integrations, and a REST API, Speak AI maintains an official Model Context Protocol server (@speakai/mcp-server). This allows local AI clients like Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf to read your transcripts, query sentiment metrics, and pull clips directly into your development or writing workflow without manual exports.
You also get embeddable audio and video recorders. Instead of scheduling a live call, you can embed a branded recorder on a web page to collect asynchronous spoken feedback and run it through the same transcription pipeline.
What Users Report and What Stays Gated
On G2, Speak AI holds a 4.9 rating across nearly thirty reviews. Praise clusters heavily around time savings for qualitative coding. Analysts report collapsing weeks of manual tagging into single-day review cycles. Users also consistently call out co-founder and CEO Tyler Bryden for providing fast, direct support when edge cases pop up.
The complaints and trade-offs are equally clear:
- Advanced call scoring, custom sales scorecards, and AI interviewer agents are excluded from self-serve plans. You have to book a sales demo to access custom scoring workflows.
- The user interface shows occasional translation hiccups in non-English settings, and administrative notification settings remain rigid.
- Compared to Fireflies or Otter, the calendar integration feels secondary to the media repository.
The Call
Skip Speak AI if you just want automated bullet points from team syncs. Otter and Fireflies provide far more meeting hours for a lower monthly fee without metering your calendar by the hour.
Pick Speak AI if you analyze customer discovery calls, research focus groups, or media archives. The combination of multi-model LLM chat, embeddable survey recorders, and direct MCP server access makes it a serious research tool, provided you factor the credit limits into your budget.
