The Rank Tracker That Figured Out AI Citations

If you spend any time on SEO Reddit, you will notice a recurring theme when Nightwatch comes up. Users do not treat it as a replacement for the massive suites like Ahrefs or Semrush. Instead, they buy it to do the one thing those giants often fumble: actual, hyper-local rank tracking.

They recently added AI visibility tracking to the mix, monitoring ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. I spent some time digging through their pricing pages and feature lists to see if this is actually useful or just a wrapper to catch a trend.

Here is my take.

What actually works

Nightwatch's biggest selling point is precision. You can track rankings down to a specific zip code across 107,000 locations. If you run local campaigns or manage multiple Google Business Profiles, this level of granularity is exactly what you need.

But the real draw right now is a feature they call Citation Intelligence. Instead of just telling you how often your brand is mentioned by ChatGPT, it links those AI answers directly to your traditional search rankings. Because AI engines often pull from live search indexes, a dropped position in Google might be the exact reason Gemini stopped citing you. This connects the dots in a way other tools miss.

There are also a few specific perks that make life easier for agencies:

  • They do not charge per seat. You can invite your whole team and all your clients without your bill going up.
  • White-label reporting is included on the very first tier, so you do not have to upgrade just to put your logo on a PDF.
  • You get a three-year history of SERP snapshots to prove exactly what a result page looked like on a specific day.

The Catch

There are a few pricing decisions that might annoy you.

First, there is no free tier. The entry-level Starter plan is EUR 99 per month if you pay monthly, and everything is priced in Euros. This makes it annoying for US buyers who want a static monthly cost without currency fluctuations.

Second, the limits on that base plan are strict. You are capped at 500 tracked keywords and 50 AI prompts. If you run a large site, you will hit that ceiling very quickly and find yourself forced onto the EUR 159 Professional tier.

Finally, read the fine print on their trial. The pricing FAQ explicitly states that if you do not cancel the 14-day trial, it automatically rolls into a paid monthly subscription. You have to remember to hit cancel.

The Verdict

Nightwatch is an absolute specialist. If you need deep site audits, backlink analysis, and content strategy, you still need Ahrefs. But if you already have your research workflow sorted and just want to know exactly where you rank in Seattle, and whether Perplexity is actually citing your content, this is the tool to get.

Skip it if you are a solo founder on a tight budget looking for a Swiss Army knife. Buy it if you are an agency tired of paying per-user fees just to let your team look at a dashboard.
