Monoscope pulls logs, traces, metrics, errors and session replay into one place, and it does the part API teams actually care about: it watches your API contract and tells you when a response shape changes before a customer files a ticket. The SDK coverage is real, with 17+ frameworks and 780+ OpenTelemetry integrations, nothing gets sampled away, and the hosted MCP server means you can ask your AI editor what production is doing instead of building a dashboard first.
The friction starts with the name. The product used to be APItoolkit, and the rebrand is only half finished across the web: apitoolkit.io now redirects to monoscope.tech, but blog posts, GitHub threads and older docs still say APItoolkit, so searching for help is messier than it should be. Pricing is the other snag. There is a free tier, but past it you pay per event at $1 per extra 1M, and because Monoscope deliberately captures everything with no sampling, your bill tracks your traffic rather than a plan you picked. The bring-your-own-S3 tier helps with retention costs, though it also means you now own a storage bucket. As a smaller vendor it also has less community scaffolding than the incumbents: fewer answers already written down for the exact problem you are hitting at 2am.
Then there is fit. Plenty of teams do not need a separate observability layer, because their backend platform already ships logs, query performance and error reporting in the box. Mobile and desktop developers usually want crash reporting and real user timings, not contract alerts on a REST endpoint. If your worry is the monthly bill rather than the feature list, self-hosting the stack on your own server changes the maths completely. And if the question you keep asking is what people are doing inside your product, that is product analytics, not API telemetry. Worth saying plainly: our directory has no drop-in API observability competitor right now, so the tools below each take over part of Monoscope's job rather than replacing it whole. They are ranked by how much of that job they cover.
